Who: Professor Ikin Salvador
- Ikin Salvador worked on a dissertation on the batek of southern Kalinga for the Graduate School of Anthropology, University of the Philippines in 1998. Since then she continued to do her field research documenting the vanishing material culture of the Philippine Cordillera specifically on the traditional tattoos through photography. Batek and Tubug are some of her major contribution to the scant literature on the subject. She continues to do her research in the Cordillera mountains, her solace and her home. Salvador is a recipient of numerous research grants like the National Commission on Culture and the Arts. She has been invited abroad to present her research to academic and cultural institutions. Salvador is currently teaching full time at the Department of Social Anthropology and Psychology, University of the Philippines in Baguio.
What: “Chat w/ Prof. Salvador @ Sala” - a Presentation and Q&A sponsored by Tahanan
"Signs on Skin, Beauty and Being: Traditional Tattoos and Tooth Blackening Among the Philippine Cordillera" is an exhibition of photographs and artifacts that has traveled around the Philippines, Los Angeles, Berkley, and is currently on display at the University of Michigan. The program to be held @ Sala Café in Chicago will consist of a talk by Professor Ikin Salvador along with a sampling of the photos and artifacts from the ongoing University of Michigan exhibit.
